Football and Wine

While in the midst of football season, we football fanatics have been stocking up on some manly fare like burgers, nachos, pizza, brats and munchies.  And while most of us think beer and football go together, why not try wine instead? After all, we do want to show some sophistication. And there are some wines that pair with football and football fare.

When you think football, dirt, locker rooms and sweat come to mind. Some wines that will give you a little of that football feeling include: Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz or a blend of these two grapes. And since your team will win, (go blue - U of M!), celebrate with a sparkling wine like Asti Spumante or a Moscato.

Below are some favorite football food and wine pairings:

  • Nachos with Zinfandel
  • Pizza with Barbera, Chianti or Sangiovese
  • Cheeseburgers and Shiraz
  • Popcorn and champagne, although I like Riesling, since the sweet flavor of Riesling complements the salty flavor of popcorn.
